“I’ve got yours, Donna!”
“What?!” Donna exclaimed, snatching the overpriced keychain from Martha’s hands. ”There’s never a Donna!”
“Yeah well there’s never a Martha either and yet here you are,” Martha said, holding up her own keychain. ”It’s a successful search so far. Now to find Rose… ah, here!” She passed the keychain to Rose and the three women went to the front counter to pay. They stood in line, discussing where to go next.
“We could always go for Splash Mountain…” Rose suggested innocently.
“As if!” Martha gave her a playful shove. ”Last time I got soaking wet while YOU sat up in the back laughing at me.”
Rose shrugged and laughed. ”It was a sunny day. You dried off in no time. But hey, I’ll sit up front this time around if it’ll get you back on that log ride.”
“Why don’t we take a break from rides for now? I’d rather wander the park and get autographs,” Donna said as they left the gift shop. ”We’ve got plenty of time to go on rides again and again. Let’s just relax a bit this afternon.”
Martha and Rose looked at each other and shrugged. ”Wait, I smell chips,” Rose said, spotting a food cart nearby. ”I’ll be back.”
She started walking towards the cart but stopped dead, heart pounding, when she noticed the brown pinstripes and crazy hair. A second later the man half-turned, clearly not her Doctor… but he was wearing the glasses! And his hair was just the same as the Doctor’s, and the suit and the swirly tie… Rose closed her eyes, thinking she was imagining things, but when she opened them he was still there, this man who wasn’t her Doctor. By now Martha and Donna had caught up and were staring at him too.
“But that’s not…” whispered Martha.
“That’s not him,” Donna said definitively, and immediately marched up to the man. “Oi, you!”
The man turned towards the voice and his face lit up.
“Donna!” he exclaimed, reaching out and giving her a hug. Donna was flabbergasted. Who in the WORLD was this man? Suddenly she saw a couple of cameras flashing, and when she glanced up at this not-Doctor she realised he was beaming at the people scattered around photographing them. She shoved him away and demanded, “Just what do you think you’re doing?!”
“Great cosplay!” the man said to her as a response, shaking her hand. ”I’m Tom, what’s your name?”
She stared at him blankly. ”Donna…” she said.
“Ah I like it, keeping in character,” the man - Tom - said. ”Well, hope to see you again. I’ll be in the blue suit tomorrow,” he added with a wink. ”Have a good one!”
He walked off, leaving Donna standing poleaxed as Martha and Rose rushed up.
“What was THAT?” Martha asked, staring after Tom.
“He knew my name,” Donna said slowly, “but he wasn’t the Doctor. He seemed to think I was just dressing up.”
“Dressing up? As what?” Rose watched him until he vanished in the crowd.
“He said he’d be in the blue suit tomorrow,” Donna added. ”I wonder…”
“He knows about our Doctor, he dressed up as our Doctor, but he isn’t our Doctor,” Martha said. ”But if there’s a not-Doctor wandering around Disneyland…”
The three women looked at each other for a moment. Suddenly Rose took off running, calling over her shoulder, “I bet I can find myself first!”
Martha and Donna glanced at each other, grinned broadly, and followed Rose.
